Apple variety Candy

Candy belongs to the group of summer apple varieties. This is a variety of domestic breeding, created at the All-Union Research Institute. Michurin when crossing old Russian varieties Korobovka and Papirovka. The variety is not zoned for industrial gardening, but is widely known and loved by amateur gardeners for amazingly tasty and beautiful fruits.

Apple variety Candy

Characteristics of varietal characteristics... Trees of the Candy apple tree are rather tall, characterized by fast growth. The term for fruiting depends on the rootstock on which the tree is grown. On a medium-sized rootstock, the first apples appear at 4 - 5 years of age, on a low-growing rootstock, the tree begins to bear fruit earlier, sometimes already in the second year.

The term for picking fruits begins in August, they hold tightly on the branches, do not crumble. The yield is average. 30 - 50 kg of harvest is removed from a tree of five years old. The shelf life of apples is up to 2 months. Fruits are medium in size, usually 80 - 120 g, even in size and shape. With an abundance of sun, apples acquire a bright yellow color with a red striped blush. At the stage of full maturity, the fruits are liquid, with tender pulp. The apples taste very sweet with a specific delicate aroma. On a five-point scale, taste is rated at 4 points.

The winter hardiness of the trees is quite high, it allows you to grow this apple tree to the northern borders of the Moscow region. The resistance of leaves and fruits to scab damage is different; in fruits it is slightly lower, but in general for the variety it is higher than average.

Features of crown formation... The crown of trees of the Candytnoye variety is powerful, spreading; when formed correctly, it is rounded. Densely leafy branches. The leaves are firm, leathery, dark green in color. The apple tree reacts very sensitively to pruning, which stimulates annual fruiting and has a positive effect on the size of the fruit. This is especially important for aging trees. The shape and growth of a tree is highly dependent on the type of rootstock. It can be grown on a frost-resistant skeleton-forming agent, in bush and stanza forms. Trees have excellent regenerative ability. Even after harsh winters, they bloom, bear fruit and grow.

Growing areas... The apple tree of the Kandytnoye variety is not recommended for industrial gardens due to the difficulty of crown formation and poor transportability of the fruit. However, in amateur gardening, it is widespread throughout the European part of Russia, where it is valued for its unpretentious care and excellent taste of the fruit. The relatively high winter hardiness makes it possible to grow this variety in the Siberian region, where it is found in the Novosibirsk, Kemerovo regions and in the Krasnoyarsk Territory.

We planted one sapling of the Candy apple tree in 2009. The sapling was planted in the spring. I got accustomed over the summer and survived the winter well. Cold winters and frosts over 30 degrees, unlike many other fruit trees, survived well. Now the seedling has grown into a tree about 4 m high and with a rather powerful trunk. The apple tree bore its first fruits for 4 years. By the number of apples, the harvest is average, not to say that it is abundant. The fruits are rather large in size and the branches of the tree sag strongly under their weight, but there were never any breaks of the branch. The taste is very juicy and sweet so much that it seems that they are sweeter than sugar. The taste of apples resembles delicate caramel or, in fact, some kind of candy or marmalade. In our family, this variety is on a special account for its fruits. For some reason, the female half of our relatives is more delighted with the fruits of Candy than the male.

This variety has almost no carrion. The fruits, if not damaged, were stored with us for a maximum of two weeks, they did not have time anymore, as they were eaten. But apples just picked from a branch are much tastier and juicier. There is a peculiar problem with the sweet taste of apples. It happens in a year when there are many wasps, then they directly bite into the apple and sit inside it, eating the flesh. When you pick an apple, you need to look at it at the wasp, otherwise you may not notice it and get a bite.

Taking care of the tree consisted in the fact that the seedling was planted in a hillock from the brought soil. Manure was laid on top of the sod, and then ground was poured about 40 cm high. The hillock was about 2 m wide. The surface of the hillock was covered with a dense layer of mown grass. We also cover the tree for the winter with spruce paws and regularly whitewash and prune it. We water the apple tree only in very hot weather infrequently (once or twice), but very abundantly. The fruits of this variety can successfully replace a sweet dessert, and this is especially true for diseases of the endocrine system or if someone is on a weight loss diet.

Thanks for the description. Now I understand that I don't have Candy, although I would like to compare the taste. I want to register a new variety, I shoveled the entire Internet, the closest was Candy. Thanks to your description, I understand that this is not it. I also have a summer variety, but the wasps do not eat it, the apples fall, although not intensively. The taste is harmonious, I would not say that it is very sweet, just what you need. I have not eaten more delicious apples. We will promote a new variety.

I bought an apple tree Candy. And as it happens, I later read that she needed a pollinator. Traveled the whole city in search of another apple tree, but found nothing (from the proposed list). Tell me how to be. The tree won't bear fruit?

Hello dear gardeners! I can not help but share my impressions of the taste of Candy apples! Just tasted straight from the tree - amazing taste! Indeed, as described here on the site! My husband ate 5 pieces, I was one, but whole! I think I'll start eating apples now! Today is September 8, 2017! And three trees were bought last spring in the Timiryazev Academy on the street. Apiary for 500 rubles, with an open root system. I also bought 1 piece at the same place - Medunitsa, Shtrifel, Orlik, Dream, Pepin saffron, Winter Beauty, Bogatyr (2 pcs.). We have two plots nearby - I try for my sons, they will not plant them themselves.

My husband and I planted our first apple trees twenty years ago, and we cut them down ourselves now that we are already 50! It's a pity, but what to do! We didn't like them. Lobo bought at OBI is constantly scabbed. Do anything! Delicious apples were beautiful inside when you take a bite! But tired of collecting them and throwing them away. And Antonovka, bought in the same Timiryazevka, became quite wadded almost immediately ... and it’s not that Antonovka, no one.

Thanks to this site I chose these varieties! I wanted even more, but much more! And plant candy, take the time and place!

I urge my friends not to spare old trees, to create their own delicious interesting gardens! I will copy my message for another site, maybe someone will dispel doubts!

I will also add: they say that the pear Just Mary is something ?! who knows?

I am very glad that you liked this variety. We have been growing Candy for 20 years. This is our favorite ... was. But 2 years ago something happened to the tree: it is terribly ill. The bark on the branches is cracking, peeling off. The branches are drying up. Almost stopped bearing fruit. Than we just didn’t sprinkle it! Now they planted it to replace Medunitsa - this is a variety of the same author, the wonderful Isaev - and similar to taste.

And plant pears only in pairs. Chizhovskaya is especially good paired with Lada.Chizhovskaya are not inferior to southern sweet varieties of pears. It gives a lot of fruits, every year. She grew up with us for 21 years, until the neighboring junipers infected her with a rust fungus. We treated her for five years and still had to cut it down. Then they told me in the nursery: fruit and coniferous trees are incompatible. Tested on my long-suffering pear.

I will add, based on 22 years of gardening: whoever wants to get stable fruit yields in the Moscow region - drive all the conifers away from your gardens. And the garden will hurt less.

Svetlana, I saw your phrase about Antonovka from Timiryazevka. We have the same picture - they planted it 5 years ago, in 2019 the first fruits were awaited. I was already crying from frustration. Until they cut it out, they left it for juice.

I bought Maria 4 years ago, and last summer she pleased with the fruits. Pears are large, juicy, sweet, when they lie down a little after picking up. Wasps love them, I had to take them off earlier. The son was surprised that such people grow in the country, he said - like imported pears in a store.

An apple tree appeared in my garden almost by accident. Dad decided to give me a gift and brought three apple trees. One of which was Candy. We did not know what kind of variety it was. The salesman assured my father that he was very good. At the beginning, I thought this title was just a publicity stunt. At 4 - 5 years old, I deflected the branches towards the horizon. With the help of wide bands (so as not to damage the bark) and pegs driven into the ground.
The next year, there were fruits. Started tasting. When the fruits are small greens, they are bitter. I was even upset. But then, when they began to ripen, they turned out to be juicy and sweet. The pulp was firm - I really liked it. Then, when the seeds turned black, the pulp in places became transparent and soft, which was very much liked by all elderly relatives.
I grafted this variety on a red-leaved stock. Fruits appeared on it for 3 or even 2 years. The taste of apples does not differ from the native tree. The tree of this variety is distinguished by a peculiar structure of the crown, by which now I can distinguish this variety from others. Now I hardly spend time on trees of these varieties, I only remove branches that interfere with each other. He has good winter hardiness. This year, in winter there were 40 frosts. The trees did not suffer, although they bore abundant fruit before this winter. Candy is resistant to disease and never hurt in my garden, although trees of other varieties were sick and even died.

Our Candy DOES NOT BITTER AT ALL! Even when they are small fruits, they are neutral in taste, as they say, like herb, with a slight hint of sweetness. But little zelentsy has neither acid, nor even more bitterness

And my candy grows, taste and aroma - you can't confuse it with others. In a fruitful sunny year, the fruits are smaller than average, but sweet (they have a caramel aftertaste), in a wet cloudy year they are watery, the taste is much weaker. It tolerates winters well, the temperature of -37 ° C did not affect flowering and fruiting in any way.
Requires the formation of a crown, otherwise it quickly thickens and picks up fungal diseases, the quality of the fruit decreases.
The apples were stored for the longest time for 1 month, the taste deteriorated markedly, so I recommend using them only fresh.

We also have Candy. The variety tolerates all weather anomalies very well. Somehow a tornado passed through the site (for the first time such a phenomenon was in our village) - almost all the seedlings died, Candy endured well. And about the pollinator, they also said that it is better to plant nearby. We bought Grushovka - a good pollinator.
